Le Jardin Secret
A water garden in the middle of the souks, rebuilt stone by stone
About the place
The palace dates from the Saadians, was rebuilt in the 19th century by a caid, then stood abandoned and half-ruined until 2008. An Italian team spent eight years putting it back together, with English landscape designer Tom Stuart-Smith for the planting. There are two gardens: the exotic one, with plants from five continents, and the Islamic one, four squares around a channel whose water still comes from a khettara, the underground galleries that kept Marrakech alive for a thousand years. The tower, 17 metres, is the only high point open to the public in this part of the medina: roofs, minarets, satellite dishes and cats.

Visiting tip
The ticket is valid all day for a second entry. Come around 10 for the light and return at 5:30: the green pavilion turns gold and there's almost nobody left.
