Dar El Bacha – Museum of Confluences
The Glaoui's house, a café with 200 coffees, and ceilings nobody knows how to make anymore
About the place
Thami El Glaoui ruled Marrakech from 1912 to 1956, an all-powerful pasha under the Protectorate, and this house was his showcase: Churchill, Chaplin and Colette were received here. After independence it was confiscated and shut for sixty years. The National Museums Foundation reopened it in 2017. You come for the riad with its four orange trees, the zellige on the columns and above all the painted cedar ceilings, the reception hall's first. Exhibitions rotate; the one on religious confluences, with the Torah, the Bible and the Quran side by side, was the strongest. Bacha Coffee, in the old dining room, serves 200 coffees in silver pots. It's expensive and packed, but it's beautiful.

Visiting tip
If the café tempts you, put your name on the list at the door before buying the museum ticket. Closed Tuesdays, and on Saturdays the café turns people away from 11.
