Tickets & prices

Budget 30 to 100 dirhams per entry, cash almost everywhere: card terminals go down often in the medina. State sites (Bahia, El Badi, Saadian Tombs) are 100 MAD for foreigners, 30 for Moroccans and residents with ID. Majorelle and the YSL museum sell online only, at least a day ahead.

Getting around

In the medina everything is on foot, and you will get lost; that's normal. Follow the Koutoubia minaret or ask a shopkeeper "Jemaa el-Fna?" rather than anyone offering to guide you. For Gueliz, a small beige taxi with the meter on, 20 to 40 dirhams. Big taxis are for long trips only.

Best hours

Between 9 and 11, or after 4pm. At midday the medina is crushed by heat from April to October and the coaches from the coast unload their groups. On Fridays around 1pm some sites close for an hour for prayer. During Ramadan hours get shorter and museum cafés close during the day.

Visiting etiquette

Photos without flash almost everywhere, except the dark room at the YSL museum. Shoulders and knees covered in madrasas and tombs: not compulsory, but appreciated. Don't photograph people without asking, and a "salam" to the guard opens more doors than you'd think.

Everything fits in a mile-wide square

From Ben Youssef to the Saadian Tombs is twenty-five minutes on foot at a stroll. Gueliz (Majorelle, YSL) is ten minutes by taxi from Jemaa el-Fna.
