Mohammed VI Museum for the Civilisation of Water
How a city was born on a dry plain: the story of water, told for children too
About the place
Marrakech has no river. It exists because in the 11th century the Almoravids dug khettaras, galleries several kilometres long that bring water from the Haouz aquifer by gravity alone. This museum, opened in 2017 by the Ministry of Habous on the Casablanca road, tells that story with models you operate, an immersive room on oases, water-sharing among Souss tribes, ablutions, public fountains, up to the dams of Hassan II. It's a state museum, a bit didactic, but well done, air-conditioned, and children genuinely enjoy it. Allow an hour and a half.

Visiting tip
Come at opening, then carry on to the Menara gardens ten minutes away; the Menara basin is fed by this very system. Closed Mondays.
