Mouassine Museum – Museum of Music
A Saadian apartment found under the paint, and concerts in the evening
About the place
In 2012, while restoring an ordinary house in the Mouassine quarter, Patrick Manac'h found under fifteen coats of whitewash a douiria, the upstairs reception apartment, with its stucco, painted woodwork and 16th-century domes intact. It's the best-preserved Saadian domestic interior in the city, everything else having been redone or lost. The museum is small, four rooms around a patio, with a collection of instruments: oud, rebab, Gnawa guembri, Rif drums. In the evening, two or three times a week, thirty people sit on the banquettes for an Andalusian or Gnawa concert, a metre from the musicians.

Visiting tip
Ask about concerts at reception during your daytime visit and book: thirty seats only. The terrace faces the Mouassine minaret, very good for 5 o'clock tea.
