The house of a Dutchman who spent sixty years retracing the caravan route
About the place
Bert Flint arrived in Marrakech in 1957 to teach Spanish and never left. For sixty years he bought, in the markets of the South and the Sahel, what traders considered worthless: mats, camel saddles, Tuareg jewellery, bridal headdresses from the Draa, baskets from Mauritania. He arranged it all in his riad, room by room, like the stages of the trail between Marrakech and Timbuktu. You cross the High Atlas, the Draa valley, the desert, the Niger river. The labels are written by him, sometimes by hand, with opinions. Flint died in 2022; the museum carries on, a little fragile, under Cadi Ayyad University.
